louisiana is not the first place you would think of when looking for new,good black metal bands to check out.But thats exactly where Legions Of... Hoar Frost hail from.On the bands debut "bringers of the black flame" the band mixes in the both the more hateful,extreme style of black metal with the raw screeching guitars,screaming vocals but the band also has some really well played and mixed in melodic almost beautifully played instrumentals entertwined some of the songs.Guitars as mentioned are crazy,frenzied with raw,thin guitar riffs drumming is just as intense and impressive with some non-stop blasting beats and occasional mid-tempo drum patterns.the vocals are shared and mixed a bit with the traditional violent blackend shrieks but also some deeper growls are used in a few songs and even some melodic,clean male chants.I defintly wouldn't label Legions a melodic black metal band as their sound is far to violent for that label.But i like how the band is not afraid to mix in different elements into their violent black metal sound.I am looking forward to hearing what this band does musically on future releases until then i will just enjoy bringers of the black flame and highly suggest any fans of black metal do the same!!

Legions of Hoar Frost – “Bringers of the Black Flame”

I initially found out about Legions of Hoar Frost after searching for bands that sound like Watain on CD Baby. A list of bands came up in the search, but Legions of Hoar Frost really caught my eye. I contacted the band, bought their CD and the rest, as they say, is history.

It would be silly to start a review in this way and then not compare the band to Watain. So, here goes. Legions of Hoar Frost are not like Watain. They are similar in the respect that they both play Black Metal and they are both clearly masters of that particular dark art, but beyond that they are two very different entities.

It feels like Legions of Hoar Frost have used “Bringers of the Black Flame” to showcase every aspect of their collective talents. Listening to this album feels like you’ve opened the door to a Black Metal arsenal, stacked high with weaponry. In a super villains secret evil lair – obviously. Everything you could possibly want from an album is here – there are moments of intense blasphemy, evil vocals, haunting melodies and an underlying sense of doom. Like all good Black Metal albums, it makes me want to run around in a snow covered forest whilst smeared in blood and corpsepaint. Which is odd, since this band is from Louisiana.

The entire album is worthy of your time, but – if for some reason you’re a bit crap and can only listen to one song – I urge to check out “Chosen to Rule”. It is my current favourite track from the album and it blows my mind every time I listen to it – it rips its way through your ears, reaches in and claims your soul. Actually, while you’re there, check out “Black Dragon Ov Chaos” as well – I get a fantastically dark ceremonious feeling whenever I listen to it.
Who knew that Louisiana would be so grim?
